A new senior class photograph will be taken Tuesday at Soquel High, and tensions calmed Friday, following an impassioned protest the day before sparked by the suspension of a handful of students due in large part to concerns about inflammatory and intimidating "white power" behavior and vandalism by some on the campus this school year.

The issue exploded somewhat Wednesday, when the school took disciplinary action against a handful of students after a senior class photograph in which a few students wore white and sported bandanas, in an apparent statement about white supremacy. Lawrence-Emanuel said he could not discuss discipline measures, but students at the peace rally said five teens had been suspended. "We seem to have come to resolution with everyone and are very encouraged by the progress so far," he said. "We arranged to reshoot the school panorama on Tuesday and all the students have been encouraged to wear a peace sign."

Those callers also pointed out that an obvious part of the problem is that students can be afraid to report such abuse.

Lawrence-Emanuel said he hopes more work with and among students will help victimized students feel empowered enough to no longer tolerate such bullying. He added teachers were provided with "guidelines" to talk about the issue with students.

"If we can make inroads on those attitudes, that would be great," Lawrence-Emanuel said. "Certainly we are trying to take any momentum from this year and roll it over into next year so that we can make sure more voices are heard."

"The action was to suspend," he said. "And for the days of suspension, students can't participate in activities. All students have the right to an appeal and all students have had the benefit of having additional evidence that was brought forward and considered."
